Red Sea Reefer 750XXl Build -Questions & Advice needed

Hello Everyone,

A few years ago I lost everything in my 92 gallon corner due to a power outage. It's my fault though, I didn't have any back up batteries for the power heads and by the time I got home my entire tank was wiped. I rage quit and told myself I would never do this again. I am finally finishing my basement and decided to start again. I was originally planning on a 300 gallon with a 150 gallon sump and then the reality of the $$ set in and I changed and decided to use what I have.

I placed a preorder on the Red Sea Reefer 750XXl (200 gallon system)

160 Gallon display w/ 40 gal sump

71 x 23.6 x 25.6 "“ Display

I will be using these items that I currently have lying around.

"¢Bubble King Mini 180

"¢Ecotec wMP40 x 2 (Unfortunately they aren't the new Quiet drive pumps)

"¢Reeflink

"¢Neptune Apex

"¢Eheim Jager 300x 2

"¢Marine Magic Aquarium dosing pump MDL@MM03B (New in box) - I will change this out in the future.

"¢Tunze Osmolator 3155 (new in box)

"¢RODI "“ I currently have a BRS 75 GPD RO/DI Stage 5

"¢CaribSea Fiji Pink Arag "“ I have 2 new 20lb bags sitting in my garage for the last few years.

"¢Dry rock - I have a shed full of 400+ pounds of different rock including Pukani & Tonga. It's probably full of spiders and bugs so I need to cherry pick & clean what I want. I will also be selling the rest along with my old equipment.

"¢Eheim 1262 (new in box)

I have a few Questions

1.Lighting - I have been reading up on the ATI Powermodule. I have been considering the T5 change for years. Do you suggest these? I think it will be cheaper to buy additional Radion's but I am curious about the T5 results.

2. Return pump"“ I have a new in box Eheim 1262 is that adequate? Per the Red sea website I need at least 1850 GPH. Is that Accurate? I would prefer not to buy if I don't have to.

3. Top off - My RO & Saltwater will be mixed & stored in the laundry room behind the Aquarium. The Sump has a built in top off reservoir and my plan is to have the Tunze osmolator set up from the RO storage to that that reservoir. Do you see any downfalls to this plan? I am worried that the tank will get flooded. It sounds great in my head but I don't know if I am missing anything.

4. Floor Pitch "“ I converted my garage to a living area. The Concrete slab will be sanded, stained and sealed. How do you usually deal with this?

5. VorTech Battery Backup - I don't have any where to place a generator. Do you have any alternatives to these? I will not make the mistake of not having a backup again.

Hello Reefer, I never really considered it but it seems like a good idea. I am going to look more into it now.

your Tank build is freaking awesome btw

Thank you.

A 60" 8 bulb sunpower w/ 2x 60" XHO Blue reefbrites will work just as good as the Powermodule.

Preordered my 750 XXL two days ago. Following your build for tips and ideas. This will be my first ever reef tank.

Hello Everyone,

1.Lighting - I have been reading up on the ATI Powermodule. I have been considering the T5 change for years. Do you suggest these? I think it will be cheaper to buy additional Radion’s but I am curious about the T5 results.

From my experience with MH, T5, LED, the best lighting is the ATI LED Powermodule. T5 + LEDs to give a beautiful shimmer. You can grow anything with a LED Powermodule.

2. Return pump– I have a new in box Eheim 1262 is that adequate? Per the Red sea website I need at least 1850 GPH. Is that Accurate? I would prefer not to buy if I don’t have to.

Eheim 1262 is 900 GPH. Great pump but not enough if you need 1850. A great budget pump that is affordable, quiet, and reliable are the Fluval SP lines. SP4 is 1822 GPH, SP6 is 3,434 GPH. If your going to add reactors and other equipment down the line get the SP6.

3. Top off - My RO & Saltwater will be mixed & stored in the laundry room behind the Aquarium. The Sump has a built in top off reservoir and my plan is to have the Tunze osmolator set up from the RO storage to that that reservoir. Do you see any downfalls to this plan? Top off with a Osmolator you will be all set. The osmolator is designed to prevent the tank from flooding. The only thing I would do if you want a better setup is get a different pump for the osmolator because the pumps do fail.

4. Floor Pitch – I converted my garage to a living area. The Concrete slab will be sanded, stained and sealed. How do you usually deal with this?

My tank is on concrete. No problems at all just make sure its on a level surface.

5. VorTech Battery Backup - I don't have any where to place a generator. Do you have any alternatives to these? I will not make the mistake of not having a backup again.

The vortech battery backups are great. You can also find some diy threads where people make diy versions.

Hope that helps.

thank You! I appreciate your responses. I am going to look into those DIY battery backups. I wasn't aware of the pumps failing on the Osmolator so I will have to look into that too. Its been sitting in a box for the last 4 years lol

The pump will not fail from just sitting in the box. These pumps fail because they get ran dry without any water.

I have a LM3 Pump for mine. Its a Peristaltic pump and built to last and can handle any distance you throw at it.

If you already have an apex, you can do a DIY to top off the reservoir and sell the tunze osmolator. You'll just need a breakout box, 2 float switches, and a pump. Have 1 float switch set as a low level in the Red Sea reservoir. When it is activated, your pump will pump water from your mixing station. Set the second float switch as a max so that when it is activated, it'll turn off the pump.

I suggested this is because the tunze osmolator has built in float switch and sensor to maintain a certain water level. If you use it in the Red Sea reservoir, it'll be no different than going straight from your mixing station to your tank. Second is I'm not sure if the pump that comes with the osmolator will be powerful enough to pump water from your mixing station to your tank. Just some thoughts
