I have a Reef octupuss elite 150 sss and i am having trouble dialing it in. It seems to have way too many bubbles comming out of the output. If I turn the pump speed down the bubbles dont reach the collection cup unless i open the volute, but then i get too many micro bubbles from the output. If i increase the pump the i have to dial the volute down and then the water level rises to just below the top of the collection cup and i have micro bubbles still.

sounds like skimmer needs to break in. excess micros are normal and should settle down after 24 to 48 hours.

i would leave the adjustment for the internal skimmer water level wide open so it's at its lowest level inside the body, then tune the pump speed low for a couple days until it beds in. If you try to adjust the skimmer to push foam into the cup now, you'll have a mess when it decides to finally break in and you will only keep getting frustrated trying to dial it. Once the skimmer settles down and you have a nice foam head in the body trying to push upwards, you should then slowly adjust the internal water level upwards in small increments and monitor for and hour or so between adjustments until you get the desired results.

I finally figured it out. Evidently over time the air intake in the silencer gets clogged with salt. I blew it out and it is back to normal.
