Reef Safe Angel or Butterfly???

RC Anemone

Hi, I'm looking for a reef safe angel or butterfly fish that won't bother corals. Could you recommend some for my family? Thank you. :)

if you can afford it i recommend a goldflake angel. they are beautiful and wont harm a coral or clam. they also do a good job at eating majano anemones! same goes for asfur angels but they love to eat open brains and plates too.

You can def get a lamark Angel...Very curious fish...I have one now ...very hardy as well, but watch if you have clams...had my fist clam not even a week and it was nipping...but if no clams go for it....

I put a flame in my 26 which is pretty much all soft coral and lps. Its been about a month and he is doing great - doesnt touch the coral and seems very hardy.

Genicanthus angels are probably the safest bet, from my own reading on the subject. There are some beautifuls angels in this genus (bellus, swallowtail, lamarck, watanabe).

That said, I do have a pygmy cherub who's perfect in my reef but I also had a coral beauty who was fine with soft corals and lps but picked on sps and clams so he had to go to another hobbyist with a FOWLR tank.

My Copperband Butterfly has been a model citizen.
He ate all the aiptasias and has never bothered a hard or soft coral.

i just looked up the goldflake angel. man is that a nice looking fish! i keep an eibli angel with no problems.

Goldflakes are one of the more reef safe angels, but they can still nip at polyps and LPS. Mine was fine for a few months and then started nipping at open brains and GSP.

goldflakes will also nip at clams in some cases.

tinkers butterfly, declives, burgess, pyramid are all "reef safe".. with caution though...

well i dont know if this counts but, my friend bought two pygmy angels for his 150 ( Coral beauty & elibi) and housed them in the same tank. They went crazy fighting for a day and then left each other alone. But a couple days later they snaped and started to eat xenias, and star poylps like crazy. I witnessed it so its possible. as for the angels there out of the tank and back at the LFS.

The pyramid butterfly is a nice addition nice beautiful fish too.
When our 300 is up and running a pyramid will be there.

I have a Emperor Angel and a Racoon Butterfly for over 1yr and have never had any problems. Plus the Emperor has such a personality and is so beautiful.

manofcoral- What types of corals are in the reef with that racoon butterfly? I have not known them to be reef safe in the least. Is there anything that you did to get them to leave your corals alone?
