Reef structural support

I am setting up a new 120 gallon tank to move several rapidly growing fish, including my Koran, from a 90 gallon. When I set up a new tank I always make a pvc grid support structure for the live rock which is then covered with sand. I love doing it this way because I never have to worry about the rock toppling if the sand erodes or is dug away by my Clowns. When I did this for my 90 gallon I was either told or read somewhere that you should drill holes in the pvc for the water to travel from section to section. This seemed logical at the time but after making the support structure this time I started looking at it and realized that it is held up off of the bottom of the tank by at least 1/4" by the elbows and tees. Therefore, water is circulating under it and over the top. It is only constructed from 1" pvc and this time instead of doing a true grid I did 5" sections from one side of the tank to the other.

It just occurred to me that possibly I am creating a dead area for water by drilling the holes in the pvc? There couldn't possibly be much movement through them?

Thanks :)
