Anyone here know of any Reef clubs in the Seattle area???

Is anyone on this board from there? If so where are the premier LFS in my area??

I live in Bonney Lake. There is a couple of good Reef stores in the tacoma area, there is also one in Issaquah. You can see my tank here:

http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=780206

It's only been up since late January. I have a long way to go.

The place in Issaquah is called Blue Sierra Exotic fish and Supply. It's where I purchased my setup. The guys name is Jonah that I talked with. I go to the place in Tacoma now. I can't remember the name right off hand but I can get it for you if need be. It's a long way to travel though.

If I can help in any way please feel free to PM me or just start the thread. I will do what I can.

Regards,

Pat

First I must say "WOW." It seems that there aren't that many people here on RC that are from the Seattle area. I don't know of any Reef Clubs around here but I am always on the lookout. There are a few fish stores in Seattle. One is in the U district on Brooklyn called Below Sea Level. It's a decent store, it's very, very small but they have a lot of livestock crammed in there. Prices are decent and they have a pretty good selection. Another fish store is called The Fish Store, on Roosevelt. They also have a good selection on livestock and corals, however, STAY AWAY FROM THAT PLACE!!!! Most of the employee's there are very mean and the store is grossly, ridiculously over priced. I have even been yelled at by one of the employees. I have never once had a good experience there. Another good store is In Everett called Pet-Pourri on Evergreen Way. They have a decent fish and invert selection and their corals are all right to. If you feel like taking a drive there is a store in Lake Stevens called Bridges Pets off of Hwy 9. Their fish/invert/coral selection is OK. There corals kind of lack and are little over priced, but they have had a few really good ones. Another fish store in Kirkland called Denny's Pet World in the lower Totem Lake Mall has a super awesome selection of fish and inverts at really good prices. However, their coral selection is extremely lacking. My second most favorite fish store is called Blue Sierra in Issaquah. That store is beyond awesome and the employees know what they are talking about. They have a top of the notch fish/invert/coral selection and their prices are very good. This is two thumbs up store and I highly recommend it. The only thing is they are very far away from me. The best store IMO is in Bellevue called Salt Water City on Northup Way. Their fish/invert/coral selection is way far beyond amazing. My jaw drops every time I go in there. Their prices are a bit high but the quality you get is hard to beat. There is also a Marine Biologist that works there and can answer any question you have. This is my favorite store to go to I give this store four thumbs up.

Thanks Pat.
That's a pretty high tech setup!
I've been to Blue Sierra and also to Saltwater City in Bellevue. Seattle has the Fish Store but it's my least favorite of the three.
I'm actually going for FOWLR as I want to have carnivores, and I'm only at plumbing stage. I got a 125gal tank. It's handy to know someone in the area to exchange ideas with.

There are at least two more forums with folks from the Northwest:reeffrontiers.com and thereeftank.com

Best,
Pablo

Sounds great. I'm going to head to the store in Bellevue called Salt Water City. I haven't been there so I guess I will have something to do tomorrow. I'll look them up and get the address.

If anyone needs anything let me know. I just tore down a 46 gallon and have a lot of extra stuff that I am selling. If any of you need anything let me know I may have it.

I do not know of any clubs around here. there is the Puget Sound Aquarium Society. I have not joined nor have I been to any meetings. The store in Tacoma has a web site. Pretty basic but it's a decent store as well and they just moved into a larger location.

here is there web site

Bob Fenner apparently is going to be speaking at the Puget Sound Aquarium Society meeting. Most folks know who Bob is.

Anyway, Indoor Reef is a good store as well. Very good selection and good prices.

Hey Pat,
I really think you will like Salt Water City. Let us know what you think of it. I may also be interested in some of the things you are getting rid of.

Maybe all of us reef geeks should get together and go check out all of the fish stores. Maybe we can even start our own reef club!!!

Yes. You guys should indeed get together and start your own club. I'm surprise that no one has already :)

I'm planning to relocate to the Seattle area in the next year or two also. Well as soon as I can find another job up there first that is :)

Also sherm71tank is from Poulsbo and might be able to point out some decent stores in the area. He also seems to know a lot about skimmers as well (DIY and otherwise)

mystikdragon7,

I think you are right. We should all get together one day and see about the possibilities. We could all meet at the Woodinville winery or something. The GTO club I get together occasionally meet at the winery in Woodinville. It's kind of a central location.

dhnguyen,

Microsoft is adding to their campus and hiring 12,000 new employees. Finding a job in this area should not be difficult. I am trying to find a MFG. engineer for the business I work for and I am having a tough time finding someone.

Anyway, I think I may run out to Belleuve today and see this fishstore. (Besides it's not raining and the goat like to run in dry weather. He loses traction easily in the rain if you know what I mean!)

Pat

Wow Looks like I created a monster. lol A reef monster. Thanx for all the input. I'm in Bellevue also. Saltwater City is pretty cool. I am going to look into the Store in Issaquah tho. always good to have several connections.

I would definetly be interested if you all would like to consider a reef club in this area. As far as I know there isn't one. But I could be wrong.

I don't know exactly what the PSAS does. I have been trying to find out information on them, and I noticed they did have a meeting awhile ago.

I'll have to do some more digging and see what is happening with these guys.
I see you already found this link.

Yeeee hawww.

Pat

You can check out reeffrontiers.com. It's a board that has a ton of members from Washington state. The PSAS also has their specific section there as well so you can ask for info about the club and when the meetings are. Hope to see you there!

Do you think you could PM a list of stuff your selling? I will be starting a 75g soon and you may have something I "need" lol.

I am a member of Reef Frontiers and there are a lot of helpful people there. I recently got some chaeto and LS from someone who was very nice and informative. I suggest that anyone from WA join reef frontiers.

Great thread guys, I'm from Eastern WA and just starting to get into the hobby. Would be great to talk to others from WA in the reefkeeping hobby. Heck, I might even see about joining a reef club in the Puget Sound area because I highly doubt there are any around this part of the state.

I'm in the Seattle area also. Farely new to reefing but only been doing it for about a year. Had a freshwater until my wife decided to do a water change for me and kind of miss judged the water temp. I think she must boiled my fish. It was a matter of a couple hours and all of fish where gone. So I always wanted a SW tank. There was no better time than the present. It started out as a 30 gal, that lasted all of about a month. I now a have 75 gal with approx. 80lbs of LR.

MY LFS of choice is Saltwater City (SWC). Great staff, very knowledgable. Not much in the Supplies dept. but all in all a great place once you get to know all of them. Blue Seirra (BS) is the store in Issauquah. This is where I got my 75gal, but I haven't been impressed with the customer service. They not very helpful and seem to be more interested in selling you something. Not really willing to answer questions. I've even got contradicting information. Now I agree reefing is open to multiple suggestions, methods and etc. Please keep in mind this is a IMHO and not trying to start a LFS store battle.

Anyway I would be interested in trying to start something other than PSAS.org.

I agree that Saltwater City is a great place to go. Andy has always been willing to discuss areas I am currently interested in. I hope it isn't too much longer before I place a special order with him for live rock.

My LFS of choice is Ocean Reef Aquatics over in Poulsbo, however, I am partial.....I happen to own it.

The PSAS is having their annual picnic and huge raffle at my shop in June. If you guys are not members, this would be a great time to come over and join the club and possibly walk away with some very nice items.
