Refractometers

I'm looking to purchase one and the price seems to range from about $39 to about $79. Is there really that much different in these instruments? the discriptions sound the same. Is one manufacturer better than another? thank

not sure about brands but the owner of precision aquatech uses a $40 refractometer and that thing is nice. its heavy, accurate and WAY more convenient than the alternative. i think if you get the cheapest one you can find your going to be very satisfied.

you can simply buy one off of ebay and call it a day.... they all can be calibrated to read correctly. i know alot of people who have bought the super cheap ebay ones and still use them to this day without a problem.

i ended up buying a more expensive one beacuse i didnt know they sold them for that cheap on ebay and i also didnt know any better back in the day.

This has been kind of discussed.

Member, Boomer, can fill you in.

If I remember correctly, he said that the only one's that really could be more accurate are "lab grade" devices, that are not only cheap, but elusive.

Buy some calibration fluid (53mS) and keep it calibrated. Fortunately, mine (Vertex), has held it's calibration and is a solid device. I have not had to calibrate it since I bought it (about 5 months now). Others calibrate daily/weekly because their device won't hold a calibration (which is common amongst these devices).
