Refuge sand depth

Having no sand at all seems to be pretty popular. Just a few small pieces of live rock and some chaeto will make it a lot easier to keep clean.

See that's why I asked because I have read so many different things. So I thought maybe if people just said it plain and to the point, like you did, it might be easier to get a better feeling of what to do.

Thanks for your input!

I think it depends what you have the fuge for in the first place.
A remote sand bed can do a good job of lowering nitrates, but it won't culture pods very well. When I see fail-fuges its often because someone just threw everything at the wall: algae, piles of rubble, a few inches of sand, a tiny crytpo zone. They think "it can't hurt, why not just do a little bit of everything" but it gets filthy cause its all cluttered and doesn't have enough of any one benefit to make any meaningful difference to the tank.

Better to figure out the job, and then choose your tool, IMO

I would like to have algae in it so I thought maybe a couple small rocks and about an inch of sand. I am mostly concerned about pods and phosphates cause I have trouble keeping the display looking good since I upgraded from a 60g to a 125g.
