Refugium lighting

I was wondering if it is okay to leave the lights on in an aquarium when the lights in a refugium are on. I have read in a couple places that it can be detrimental to the tank. I don't know why this would be so I was wondering what everyone else thought.

I do it everyday no problem. Some people prefer to run their refugium on reverse light cycle to help balance PH.
