Refugium livestock

I have a 125g with a 36" sump/fuge. The refugium has a deep sand bed, live rock, cheato and macro algae. The light is on 24/7.

I was wondering what others with similar setups have in their refugium as far as mini clean up crews or should nothing be there? I have seen urchins in some at the LFS tanks but with the lights on 24hrs I don't think they are an option.

Thank you in advance!

the light being on 24 hrs a day limits the amount of live stock, if any. i just switch to a 16 hr light schedule just so i could have some critters in there to help with the detritus.

I've read quite a few threads that say you should have the lights on 24/7 if you have macro algea. Is that not necessary?

if you have caulerpa yes 24 7 is the best to prevent it from spawning, but cheato grows best with a more natural lighting schedule, like the opposite of your tank. i just got rid of all of my caulerpa for this reason.

yes, I have grape and flat blade caulerpa along with cheato. So with the lights on 24/7 what am I limited to as far as what I can add to clean up the sand bed, side walls, etc.

thanks agian.

If the light schedule is a more natural one, what critters can be kept in the refugium? How about nassarius snails?

I would imagine most critters will survive just fine. Its just not natural, so...who knows what goes on with their biorhythms. I have my light on like 18 hrs and have a hanful of hermits, some turbo snails and, like the Australia of old, every no good misfit that has come out of the DT. Bad crabs, a blenny, etc.

not very many critters will live too long with a 24 hour schedule. every thing needs a little bit of a break. if you think about the natural habitat where most of the animals come from (except the turbos), they are used too a very long light cycle, just not too intense too soon which is why we have to keep our halides time so small. i personally have a pc on my refugium and have it timed for 16 hrs, just to over compensate a little for the lapse in time/ph fluctuations that might happen. if it is a more natural lighting you can keep whatever you like, just so long as they do not release any toxic chemicals. as i am sure you are well aware, the point of a refugium is to provide a safe haven for other animals (copepods, amphipods, any other pod or various inverts) to live without being eaten, otherwise you just have another tank, right? so why keep carnivorous animals there? i personally keep the live stock very limited , and just do the work that they would do myself. it just helps to limit the hungry animals you have that are taxing your system and producing waste. do not get me wrong you want to brake down the nutrients the best that you can which is why you have the caulerpa and other fast growing algae/ coral. keep it simple and work at the hobby that is why it is a hobby. i am not trying to preach. that is just my 2 cents.

No, thank you. That is what I was looking for. This is my first sump/refugium so I just wanted to make sure I was setup right. I have only done a 55g fowlr previous to this tank. Planning on the first coral in a few weeks.

thanks agian.
