Refugiums -- What works best??

Hi everyone,
I am planning a somewhat large aquarium, around 230g, mostly FOWLR because I will not be around to take care of it all the time.

Anyway, I want to add a refugium, and I was thinking of 30g inline tank, with a DSB and some LR??

What works best with this? I have never personally attached a refugium to any of my tanks, so im new at this. What size would you reccommend? What water flow?

Thanks!

thanks for responding thor.

Is your fuge part of your sump? How do you keep the water flow lower in your fuge than in your sump?

Could you explain a little more please, I'm very interested.

Thanks

I have a 29G fuge hooked up, through a sump, to a 65G display tank. The fuge is a display as well with 2 Seahorses and loaads of macro algaes.

I have the fuge overflow draining into the sump as well and a 2nd return pump flows water back into it. I have one powerhead in there as I use the fuge as a frag grow out as well, but most of the flow is directed onto the glass not to disturb the seahorses.

I recommend a variety ( 3 or more) of macroalgaes to ensure excellent nutrient export.

i have my drain split off into two one into my sump one into my fuge (many split the return but i chose not to due to my return gph being somewhat low) then i have a ballvalve on the refugim pvc where the water comes in and a ballvalve on the sump where the water comes in.. i can adjust the flow this way.. then i just have a baffle in the sump that divides the refugim and sump and the water just overflows the baffle dividing them.. its relatively simple and pretty fool proof since your flow wont fluctuate due to numerous reasons.. just an idea for you

I just re-plumbed my system. 65 gallon display drains into a 25 or 30 gallon sump. The 'fuge is a 20 high above the sump. I have an Eheim pushing water up to the 'fuge and a Mag950 pushing water back to the display tank.

The 'fuge has some rock rubble, a couple/three of inches of sand and a bunch of cheato. I want to add at least a couple more kinds of macro algae and more rock rubble to it. I also have my leathers in there as I want to get rid of my softies and go more LPS and SPS.

Awesome ideas. rsxs, that was kinda what I was thinking of.
Mayoboy - cool idea, but I probably won't be able to do this because there will be no room beneath the tank.

I actually justd remembered that I have a 75 Reef ready in the basement, as well as a tidepool2 (lost the biowheel years ago). I bet these could be used as a refugium. The 75g could double as a display tank, and since it already has a built in return, it could just share the same sump with the 230g tank.

Now theres an idea! Any suggestions??

sounds good to me.. the only thing is make sure the level of the water is over your overflow but i dont know if you want allthat for a refugim i mean it would be cool but if you want it to be a display lighting is gonna be alot... maybe baffle it off into sections.. i dont know, just look around see what you like and what works..

I think that imma baffle it off into sections. Keep a big part for the fuge and divert a couple houndred gph of the return through it, and then use the rest as a typical sump.

Anyone have any suggestions on the type of lighting to use over the fuge?? I have a couple NO flourescents lying around, but nothing substantial
