Remora S Protein skimmer review

Just bought another skimmer one for my 24 gal nano cube reef They are a great hang on back skimmer, very powerful and I have tried many others and I like these so much I bought another one for my new tank setup same size tank, I tried the Hydor Slim Skim and the thing is to tall for my tank cant get the water level right, and it also takes up so much space in the tank, and it appears to be weak compared to the Aqua C Remora S. I am just using surface skimming, live rock, and a good protein skimmer for filtration, simple setup. And my tank has been running for a year and my sps corals are doing great. Oh I also have a bag of carbon in the rear chamber and I have a phosban 150 reactor with a little gfo. Anyone else love there Remora S skimmer. If you have the old one I would highly recommend switching to a Cobalt pump.

I was looking at it - but like the models with the pump inside the skimmer itself and not hanging in the tank.

i woke up today thinking about whether or not my Remora S is doing its job.

I have the Remora S from an old build, I ran it for 48 hours in a 9 parts water, 1 part vinegar to clear up the insides from gunk. I hosed it down and shot water clear through all the nooks and crannies to make sure there was no clog.

I am currently running this on a 20g JBJ Frag Tank, i wanted a powerful skimmer because of the amount of BTA's i plan on hosting in the tank. Yes i know.. 20 gallons ... anemones.. sue me.

I'm not sure if its skimming proficiently or if my water is too clean? I've had the anemone and about 3 clown fish in the tank for about 10 days. No water changes since the initial cycle completed. I feed a pinch of pellet food once daily in a mag ring. I have a small cleanup crew. 1 Turbo, 3 Astrea, 5 Nerites and a Flame Shrimp

I did purchase the MJ1200 for backup. Im currently using a Tunze pump which should be sufficient.

My question to you is when my tank was cycling.. the bubbles in the protein skimmer did foam up and into the cup a little. Froth wouldnt even be able to describe it.. more like a failed 5 year old trying to blow bubbles.

But now the bubbles dont even travel up the cup anymore. My water levels havent changed. What do you think I could possibly check out?

Sorry for the long post! I just wanted you to have a full description.

I think when you cleaned it, you removed all the biofilm, from the skimmer. It's like starting with a new skimmer. It will now have to break in again. This is my guess.Just let it run and see what happens. There just may not be enough organics for it to skim yet.

that actually makes tons of sense. thanks so much for the insight. i hope it doesnt take long for the skimmer to kick in though. I need it to take out the black gunk my anemone spits out once in a while.

If the tunze pump has at least 260 gal per hour it should be strong enough to produce good skim initially the newly cleaned skimmer will not produce the bigger bubbles until it breaks in again, keep a close eye on it because when it kicks in again you might have to raise the cup really high. My Remora S has been running for 3 days now on a newly set up tank and is still producing micro bubbles and no skim yet. I am using my black sponges for mechanical filtration they seem to make it more difficult to skim. My other tank has the same system but I am not using the sponges and the skimmer works very good the cup is at the highest level and everyday produces about 4 oz of dark green tea color skim.

I've never tried those before but if you buy skimmers based on reviews the Remora S skimmer has great reviews. My micro bubbles have slowed down a lot and the protein skimmer is producing some skim already 4 th day from new.
