Removing aiptasia...

Derekbc

But I quarantined!
I noticed what appears to be an aiptasia at the base of a people eater, and was wondering if there is a safe way to eradicate it without damaging the coral. It's at the base of the polyp on the lower right. Here's a photo...

I have found that Kalk paste will burn the tops off but it wont kill them. You can try to put super glue gel over the aptasia.

We have used aiptasia x next to zoas before with no problem, just be careful. Going along with what Jarred said we have used epoxy to cover them up too with success.

+11111^^^^^^^^ both very good sujestions they both work very well.....just make sure you turn your power heads and filtration off for 30min. or the aiptasia x will spread thru the tank

There have been times when I've found a aptasia attached to a polyp and it looks as if using chemicals to remove it will damage the polyp. I've taken the whole piece out of the tank and gently used my finger nail to scrape the aptasia off. This usually works best with bigger polyps, like the pe variety. Then once it is off, I'll do a couple rinse's in a bowl of tank water.

Thanks for the great ideas! I was just worried about hurting the coral... It is growing from underneath the lower right polyp. I think I'll try removing the rock from the tank and try treating it that way.

I also use a small stiff bristle brush in a bowel of tank water and do several rinse cycles also. If you leave little bits of the aptasia on the rock each little bit is suppose to generate a whole new aptasia.
