Removing bubble tip anemone from rock

So like all of us I have a unique way of doing things"¦

In the course of human events I ended up with extra live rock. So I decided to step up my quarantine tank up permanently with the live rock so that it would be easier (read, more likely) to be good and QT new arrivals. My logic is if I need to dose the tank with copper or the like, I will and write off the live rock, which I was going to toss anyway. In the meantime my QT tank looks nicer and is a more natural environment for new livestock. Now I am at a point where I am planning out adding a bubble tip anemone to my system and I would like to quarantine it. My question is: should I remove the live rock first? My worry is that the BTA will wedge itself into the live rock or attach itself to the live rock. Is this a concern or are there relatively straightforward and safe ways to dislodge a BTA from live rock?

Thank you,
Arin

getting the anemone off a rock is allways hit or miss. sometimes it will be on a small chunk you could just break off,
other times it will be wedged in a crevice of the rock and impossible to get too.

if your worried, try separating the rock from the nem with eggcrate or something.

I tell you what...it just took an act of God to remove my RBTA from a rock. I tried everything and finally got frustrated and tore his foot on accident.

Use a maxijet and point it to the attachment point, right inbetween the foot and the rock. Do it from very close range, like an inch or two. Anemone will just peel off.

How long does that usually take? I tried it once for about 30 minutes and the anemone didn't budge at all. I've removed about 6 now and am pretty forceful with a credit card a wooden skewer. They all rebound in a few hours.

About 10 minutes.

Thank you all so much for your advice. I will keep the LR and hope some pushing and prodding will get the job done when the time comes. The jet idea is a very good one. That said I am going to hope my bta decides to hangout in the open sand!

I blasted mine with my MP10 for like an hour the other night...didn't move a millimeter. Stubborn little turd.

I hung mine upside down for over an hour and he didn't give in.

Used ice on his foot and no response.

I was about ready to take some boiling water and suck it up in a 50cc syringe and get nasty with him. I ended up going at him with a butter knife.

Talk about hard to move off a rock. All my other Nems give up, but not a RBTA.

Stubborn lil turds!!!!

Mine did the same thing and I left it like that for a week. I took the power head off and a week later it moved on its own

I've also heard of people using ice cubes to "rub" their foot and they come off the rock that way. I've never tried that but heard it works.

Just pointing the powerhead at the anemone will not do it. You need a direct hit with strong flow. Think how you use a powerwasher to peel off paint, for example.

Worked like a charm on many, many bubbletips.

Alright man, I just ordered one. I'll give it a shot tuesday when it comes in. Do you just stand there and hold it in hand in blast away at the crevasse the foot is in?

I had mine on a rock for over a year, once I needed it off I hung it upside down out of water for about 30 min, it came undone and fell back into the bin below.

Well, the MJ1200 get him off...and shot him across the tank...lol. I got him moved to a smaller rock surrounded my sand. He has latched on with his foot, but as you can imagine he is not too happy right now. Hopefully he will recover soon and settle in on the smaller rock which I will then be able to place where I want him. I am sure as soon as I get him situated he will go on a walkabout and end up in an even worse spot than before.

2 ways approved by me:

put an earthen flowerpot over it and wait for it to crawl up the wall.

tickle it with an old toothbrush, alternating the brush and the grip side, to release it. this might take half an hour.

the flower pot also worked for keeping the anemone in place after it was wandering around in the tank. now its foot is happily attached inside the pot and has not moved an inch.

greetings martin

So I got my BTA and what did it do, it took a day to find the deepest, tightest crevasse in the rock work and setup shop...
