Removing Rics from substrate

I have a rock filled with 20-30 blue ricordea florida. The rock that they are on has some nasty algae that I don't want to introduce into my new tank. Any suggestions for removing them without damage?

TIA,
Tim

I'd say scrub off all the algae and rinse the rock with some tank saltwater and make sure none of the algae is left on it. Or you could try chiseling off each Ricordea one by one. Take a thin layer of rock with it so you can glue it to whatever you want in the new tank.

Might want to wait for other people's opinions though. Good luck.

Thanks for the reply! At this point, it really isn't worth it for me to risk introducing this algae (dictyota) in the new tank. I could try chiseling but I may have more losses than I would like. Don't you have to remove them from the substrate to propagate them with a scalpel/razor blade?

Well you could if your not in a hurry take them and set them in a rubbermaid container with a heater. Then introduce very strong indirect current on them so as too annoy them and have them detach and float away with the current. Scoop them up individually as they let go and go through the methods involved in reataching to substrate in your new tank.

your best bet is the powerhead method blasting them to get them to move on.

cutting them will damage them of course, chiseling shouldn't damage them but you may bring some algae with the substrate

I had pretty good luck removing a minor dictyota infestation (~3" sq) by just scrubbing the rock with a toothbrush. I had to do it three times, but the dictyota is gone now. I'd take the rock out and scrub it as soon as I noticed new lobes sprouting. I also coated that section of rock in kalk paste the last time I scrubbed it, but I'm not sure if that helped get rid of it or not.

I don't even want to take the chance with scrubbing the rock seeing how bad my dictyota infestation was. I am planning on putting these rics in a ric only 30 gallon. I think I will try the powerhead method, how strong does the flow need to be? Can I just blast them with a Moded Maxi-Jet 900?

I like the idea as well. Is the heater to elevate the temp a bit to tic off the the rics, along with the current- so they let go?

i just had the same problem, i just used a hose sifaned or however you spell it and stuck the hose up to it then it sucked right off the rock.

I don't know the best way to get them off the rock, but don't try peeling them off. I tried to get mine to let go of this tiny piece of rock. I used a needle to get under the foot, but I pretty much had to cut it. It just wouldn't let go and is too mushy to peel it off. Keep us updated if that powerhead idea works!

yes the power head method works verry well for me .. just high enough to make them wobble back an forth an it might take a day maybe two.. but they will let go, or when thier withdrawn like almost closed up just pop them off with your finger..
