Replacing upright with angle iron brace

I'm building a 120g in wall in my basement. I have a single 2x4 center upright in the rear. I was going to have the sump away from the tank but have decided to go under the tank. A friend of mine is a welder and he thinks that we can remove the center support for easy maintenance if we put a piece of angle iron across under the main wood cross member and bolt it in to brace it.

Proposed Angle iron and bolts in green for clarity

What do you think, I've tried and I can't fit the sump in there as it is, I can remove the support and put it back after I install the sump, but then the sump is not removable while water is in the tank?

Any chance you could adjust the plumbing to run under the angle iron instead of cutting nearly all the actual support material out? (The flat part doesn't really help, its the vertical part that is important.

Lol, yeah just didn't feel like redrawing the plumbing. It will go under the angle.
