Return Pump Plumbing

Hi Guys,

I just have a quick question regarding return pump plumbing. I have a 75 gallon aquarium which will be setup as a mixed reef, 700 gph corner overflow (bottom drilled) with a 20 gallon sump/refugium. The issue I have is that my 3 stage sump does not have room in the 1st stage for the skimmer and the fuge will go in the second stage. The third stage I have a Reef Octopus 150 skimmer and no room for an internal return pump. I would like to setup an external return pump without drilling my sump. Something along the lines of this:

I was going to use a mag 9.5 to provide the proper flow but I was wondering if a setup like this would affect the GPH so negatively that it may be worth getting the mag 12?

Also, since I will be having my skimmer in the last stage with the return pump should I add extra plumbing to revert the water from the skimmer back to the first stage or the refugium or would there be no benefit at that point?

Thanks!
