Return pump suggestion

Been out of the hobby for a while. Looking for an internal return pump that flows similar to the mag12, but uses less power and less noise. Mag12 uses something like 110w.

How big of a tank? You need 3 times the gph as the volume of the tank - at most 5 times. (Older suggestions were generally for MUCH higher flow through the sump.)

So, if you're setting up a 100 g tank, you really only need 300 gph from the pump.

Personally, I really like the Tunze Silence series pumps. Even you want a DC pump, they have one of those in that line too.

You might consider the Diablo DC pumps(or similar). The 5500 would give you about 1400 gph at full speed, which is close to the Mag 12. But for a few dollars more you can get the 10500, which is rated at 2775 gph, and adjust the speed down to fit your return requirements, and still have enough power in reserve to add other equipment in the future, i.e. GAC, GFO, BP reactors via a manifold.

I was just about to purchase a Diablo DC myself and did some research on them. Everyone that has them is extremely happy with them and said they are next to silent. I don't think you could go wrong with one.

I picked up a quick Mag at my LFS and that is the only reason I haven't ordered one. My Mag flows 750gph and it is pretty silent as well inside the sump in the stand. So the one I have isn't that noisy.

Thanks for the suggestions, tank is a 100gal bow with a 40 gal sump. I only have 1 1.5" drain and it's kept up no problem using the mag12, just a little loud. It's probably 7yrs old. I'll look into the tune and diablo pumps. Thanks!
