Hello everyone,

I used to be a member here about 5-6 years ago when i had my first 29G tank. I couldn't remember my log in info so created a new account. Needless to say, I learned a lot browsing this forum, gaining so much knowledge from our kind members. then I sold the small tank and set up my current 75G with a 20G sump and 3 X 96 W PCs, protein skimmer and about 80-100 lbs of LR and so on. through out this years my tank went through some major changes especially thru the past 3 years that I went back school and of course spend lot less time on it. I even decided to sell the tank and forget about it ...but i just could not. I am going to keep the tank. I have made some improvements.. more frequent water changes.. balancing the chemicals.. brought it back to life. fish are pretty healthy and the corals are mainly mushrooms, polyps as u can see in the pics. the protein skimmer stopped working 4 years ago and due to the pump failure. fortunately i have enough LR in there to do the filtration, but now i want to step it up and bring a little more colors and introduce new species of coral to the tank. the skimmer will be fixed in a few days. how ever im not planing to skim 24/7. as you can see mushrooms have no problem growing in the tank. infact, i have way too many and need to reduce the quantity...but not too sure how?...I really dont want to yank them off and trash them. I got some pulsing Xenia few weeks ago, which did fine in the beginning and stated to die out as you see in the pictures. I mix my salt using Instant O salt mix. my chemicals are :

B-ionic Calcium buffer
Magnesium
Kent Iodid
Marine snow
coral essentials
iron
stronium

that i dose twice a week one capful. I am not too sure what the levels are (student life style leaves little room to spend on important items such as test kits).
using the IO salt do i still need to dose the chemicals mentioned above?
what am I doin wrong with xenia ?
how do I trim down the mushrooms? I know my LFS does not give any credit and that sucks. since my budget is reak tight right now, I will be happy to trade some of the carpet and red mushrooms with fellow members living near by (LA area)
I am looking forward to add some zoas, acan, (nice vibrant colors) and anything that u guys may suggest which can survive my tank and give nice coloration...
I have been out of the loop for so long...so please let me know what I should do to improve the quality of my tank. glad to be back and looking forward to learn and contribute as much as i can.

Art,

I would really just worry about monitoring Alk/Ca, and adjusting with the B-Ionic you mentioned above. The Idiodide, Mag, etc, is really not needed, as long as you have a good water change schedule.

Pics look good, welcome back.

laddy,

you mean those elements are supplied with IO salt mix or they are not required for coral growth at all ? I was under the impression that these are the minimum basic elements for a salt water tank/ coral growth

thank you fro the reply,

I think that you should try and save up and get a Cal, Mag and Alk test kits. You may not need to be dosing everything that you are and you could be wasting alot of additives if they aren't in need. Tank looks good by the way.
