I gave a buddy of mine a piece of rock out of my tank that was excess. It was taken out of water and allowed to dry. He would now like to add it to his 28 gallon. The rock is 3 or 4 pounds. Does anything need to be done other than washing the rock in RO water before placing it in his aquarium?

I would just rinse it and maybe pull off anything that looks already dead/dried (such as dried sponges or macro growth, etc).

How does your buddy's tank look? If he has algae, I would cure the rock for a few weeks in a tub of salt water with a skimmer in there. Do water changes every couple of days. I wouldn't want to transport any phosphates into my tank.
