reverse photoperiod for sump

what are the benefits for having your sump light on a time schedule opposite of your display light schedule? Is it mainly just for stable PH?

That's pretty much it. Some macro algae will grow faster with a rest period(cheato) but others such as caulerpa (spelling seems wrong to me right now) but anyway it needs a 24/7 lighting in order to keep it from releasing spores/going sexual/whatever the current term is being described as.

I was told that the pods are active when its dark. When the tank is light, the pods are active and get swept up to the tank.

It also helps keep your tank temp down during the heat of the summer. During the day, our house uses much more air conditioning and it generally is cooler at night. This can save on your electrical bill.

I don't light my sump any longer, as I moved all the macro algae to a 29 gallon refugium that uses less light that lighting the entire sump.

Well, I checked my pH 1 hour before the lights turned off, it was at 8.2. THEN, I checked the pH 1 hour before the lights turned on the next day, it was 8.2. Is it normal that the pH stays stable when the lights are out?
