Review: H2Ocean

First the background. For the past 1.5 years I have been using Ocean Pure. Although I thought it was fine a few people recommended that I not use it because Chinese-made salts tend to have higher metals. My PH has always been low (in the morning after dripping KALK all night the PH was about 8). and my ORP got no higher than 330. The salt mixed easily, but how hard is it to mix when you have a 25 gallon bucket filled and are using a 700 GPH power head mixing for at least 6 hours.

So, I started to look for something better. Reading a thread here people were talking positive about H2Ocean. I bought a 150 gallon bucket from MarineDepot for about $52 plus $32 for shipping.

I did a 25 gallon water change yesterday (my tank has 80 gallons of water). I mixed the salt to the proper salinity and then added 2 cups of MG to raise the MG in my tank. I also added 1 tsp of Reef Buffer. I let the salt mix for 7 hours and heated it to about the proper temp.

I did the water change as usual. These are just my observations from the next morning. 1) My PH is higher than usual, 8.08 in the morning. 2) My ORP is at 386. Mind you I have never been able to get it above 330 no matter how much I tried. This is just amazing. I am so happy.

Anyway, I will keep you up to date about the salt, but for now I cannot say more positive things about H2Ocean.

If you can, test for Alk, Ca and Mag in the mix to see what those levels are before adding.

Shawn,

I read many reviews and it is rated and tested very well. Here's a thread , but basically this sums it up:

I just tried my first batch if D-D H2Ocean Magnesium Pro PLUS and got Ca425, Alk 8dkh, and Mg 1300 1.025/6 Only complaint some seem to report are PO4 after mixing it up. I tested mine and got .02 and .05. To be on the safe side i hooked up my spare PO4 reactor to the tank i use for storing my saltwater and just let it run.

Those numbers look good - so many salts I have seen have low levels of Ca and Mg. Glad you are seeing some positive results...

What was the mag level of it? It looks like it is right around 1300. Is it higher than that? I personally run my Mg at 1350, and have heard a lot of folks running there Mg levels way up like into the 1700's sometimes to try and eradicate bryopsis, and they never experienced any issues with it.

Is it possible that the PO4 levels played any part in damaging your corals?

Good luck with the recovery Dave.

Umm, MG too high... your first post
"and then added 2 cups of MG to raise the MG ..."
Also, shouldnt salinity be checked after raising the temp?
