rewiring tunze osmolator - is it possible?

Well I guess I spilled water on the wire during a water change and never noticed. That square part with the 2 tiny screws where you attach the wires melted. Good thing it's so low voltage.

Anyway can I just cut that part off and tie + electrical tape them together? maybe even solder but I'm not really a handy person. I don't want to pay $160 for a new head unit though.

It can likely be repaired, but if you are not handy with that kind of stuff, take the whole unit to someone who is familiar with electrical repair and have them do it. 'tying and taping' sounds like a bad recipe. It needs to be soldered and re-insulated with probably some resin or liquid tape. Lots of people should be able to help you with that.
