Rimless Nano w/sump

BelowMe

New member
Hello all.
Since Im new on RC Ill start with a bit about my experiance (or lack there of).
:p

A friend started a reef shop called Elite Aquatics here in Calgary (closed now :uhoh3:). From visiting his shop I got reef fever and needed a reef tank. Becuase I had always had fresh water tanks I thought the learning curve would be mild :rolleye1:

My friend Sold me on a AIO setup because I was away with work alot he said this would be the best start. Without thinking, reading or researching I dove in. It seemed to me that murphys law followed me so far this whole journey starting my first week of reef keeping.

Let me start with saying, If I could do it all over again I would change EVERYTHING! So much livestock lost to simple lack of knowledge, and irresponsibility. Ill post some picture of my first JBJ set up in a minute, I would like to first make clear what my intentions are with this build.

My first nano cube taught me that I hate AIO tanks. I find them... wastefull, ineficient and simply ugly most of the time. So why build another JbJ?
My dad NEVER let me quit anything, and I was never aloud to start a new project till my old one was completed and cleaned. Being a new father myself (he is 7 months old now) Ive decided that my daddy knew best. So before I move onto bigger and better, I want to finish what I started. I want a successfull mixed nano cube, stable, clean, and thriving.

To give you an idea of my lack of experiance here is some pics of my old setup.

First time

This tank was very short lived, I moved soon with some buddies where I set up again and this time a little different, but still nothing special
4176_177708255359_755295359_6763946_6159649_n.jpg

And then Finally I got into some soft corals, The tank looked cool for a bit, but after my roomates tank crashed and he had to move his puffer and eel into my tank without consulting me first, my tank crashed and alot of my livestock (fish and corals) where obliterated.

After that tank crashed, I left for college for a few years, came back, settled down, got engaged to be married later this year, and have my first little boy Liam.

Now that Im in a stable place where we have settled in for a while, Im going to start another nano cube, one that will meet all my expectations. I cannot move to a bigger tank, spend more money and risk killing more of our reef.

When Elite Aquatics closed down I was able to pick up an empty 24g JBJ for 100$ (without lid) the only stand they had was the "S" stand
this was my first big fault in the new tank build, this stand is absolutly terrible! Very un-stable and very wastefull, no room for storage or anything!

I wanted with the new tank much better lighting and flow and filtration. Basicaly I was completely uncontent with the whole setup, but based on the price I continued forward. I got another friend to drill me a 1" hole on the back of the first chamber, purchased a simply 10 gallon tank from walmart and had that same friend build it into a sump.

I collected a bit of equipment, Another friend had smashed his 28jbj HQI in the back of his truck when he hit the brakes to hard. I purchased his hood and his wavetimer (ocean pulse duo). I bought a new pheonix 14,000k bulb from the stated for 55$ !! :lolspin:
Got my plumbing together and started thinking of an aquascape.
Heres some pics of my new equipment.

I knew that this time I definatly wanted a skimmer, and after reading, I found I wanted to go with the best possible skimmer. My friend from elite aquatics sold me on a Tunze Nano skimmer. So with this stuff, I figured I was ready to start the assembly process

My plan Is to drill out two more holes on the wall that divides the display from the built in sump. One hole right under the pre-existing one that JbJ uses for the return and the other whole on the other side of the tank. Then plug in the ocean pulse duo and have the two new pumps on the 10 secound timer while the stock pump runs 24/7.

After reading some more, I decided to change the stock pump directional nozzle to a DIY spray bar, Im hoping this gives me the flow I want, the least amount of dead spots in the tank.

The 10g sumps first chamber will house the filter sock, and the tunze skimmer, the 2nd chamber will hold the mantis shrimp and my macro, while the third will be the return pump and some live rock rubble.

The plumbing is going to be a hack job because Ive never had a sump, never done plumbing before. But heres the pieces Ive picked up, I would have like to have gotten some flex hose instead... but meh, price unfortunatly is always the first question in play here.

The tank and all the pieces are moved to the new house now, and Ive already set it up, Ill post some pictures later today.

I plan on removing the rim of the tank, and suspending the lights, I want this tank not to LOOK LIKE A TOY. I find most of these AIO tanks look like childrens toys, though they may have some pretty cool stuff inside, it still ends up looking childish somehow...

The livestock has been hard to manage, finding everything that fits together well, gets along, and yet serves some type of purpose.

Right now it is as follows
2x Green/Blue Chromis
1x Sixline Wrasse
1x Ghost goby
1x baby yellow tang (just aquired yesturday to help with my green hair algae)

Softies:
Few Zoas
2 Mushrooms
Kenya Tree Coral
Green star polyps

LPS
Green Cup coral (pagoda)
Watermelon Favia
Candycane Frags
Acan Frags

Sps
Green Monti
Green Acro

Inverts
Only 3 crabs
2 snails
1 Coral Bandit

Other
2x Flame scallops (I give these guys each 3 months before they pass...)
1x Crocea Clam

I may have missed a few, but thats the basics of what I have. ALL of my corals have started as frags, I only want to purchase frags, I REFUSE TO ENCOURAGE REEF REMOVAL. So I will stick to buying peices that have grown here in town, or in others aqariums. The point of the hobby is to encourage reef growth, not tear it down.

The tank Has be established since November or December 2011

Ill post some pics, all in order of first to last like a timeline. Please keep in mind the tank has not come too far for many reasons, but mostly becuase my son is my first pride and priority.
Thanks for following... if anyone is.

The Mantis In the Sump. I found this guy a few months back in my live rock, my roomate had one and I often had to feed it. These guys simply fascinate me, so I decided to keep him. He has doubled in size since i started target feeding him.

I spend alot of time tearing the rim off. I started by first cutting a section of it vertically, then I ran a razor blade along the glass up in the rim to try and break the silicone seal. To tear the rim off and do the clean up all while tank was running took me about 2 hours, and what I got was shear dissapointment. The glass rim is good from far, but FAR FROM GOOD. the glass is bubbled and chipped, I did not do this, i think jbj places the rim on to cover up this crap job.

The Tank is coming along nicely, Ive battle Cyano and green hair algae, along with 1 leak, 1 failed pump, and a few other little snags. Ill post some pics of the corals next.

Great thread. I like your persistance and drive. Unfortunately an increasingly uncommon characteristic. People are following. :D

To anyone who may be following along, I appreciate it alot. And please please give me feedback. I need critisisms, and advice, Im still very new, and need alot more education. I would love to hear anything you guys have to say.

Keep in mind, the yellow tang was added ONLY to help me get my green algae completely removed, then we will either be building a 36x30x12 rimless, or we will be trading him to a friend with a large aqarium. I respect and love all the marine creatures and would never want to harm one by squeezing it into a tiny tank when it needs a lagoon :hammer:

cheers to all,
Heres a pic of my first tank, and my current tank, even im excited to compare the differences haha.

Ok this is actually Amazing! xnmuller on canreef is GIVING AWAY colt corals and red monti's. some of the larger pieces his is selling for only 5$. Very excited, get to go and pic up some new corals for cheap :)
Will post pics tonight

I'm not a huge fan of colt corals myself... I've given a few away as well. I do like the Acanthastrea echinata though. Very nice colors. Isn't the blue tang a little big for that tank? I'm asking because I'm curious. I don't know much about fish, I'm mostly a coral guy.

Great stuff though. :D

Yes she was, she is now gone, along with the engineer goby (he reached 12" in just 3 years) and the maroon clown is now gone aswell. The tank seems much emptier... haha
Ill post the pics of the new corals I picked up, he had an awsome red monti mother colony there, so im excited to see how my frags do.

Also, got a amazing 7" piece! haha, pretty much a colony on its own.

My Fiance and I went to edmonton to go to westedmonton mall. While there we took a tour underneath the seal's pool. They had a petting zoo, some coldwater anemones and urchins, and some stingrays.

I felt bad for the stingrays, 3 of them in this little pool, and a bunch of people sticking their hands it at the rays all day. Poor guys, even I couldnt resist but to pet em once or twice.

Heres the cold anemone Pond from the pacific ocean I believe. Heres me telling her to come check this out! haha

Breanne Trying to pet one. Leave it to her to be the only one who the rays wont touch... haha she has a way about her...

They even had some penguins. When we say the cage any everything they were stuck in, we kept thinking of the movie Happy Feet. How sad the guys must be, trapped in there... and my gorgeous soon to be wife.

Anyone who might be following along, I NEED SOME HELP!

I have been planning on re-building my aquascape ever since I finished it, I have never been completely content with it at all. First, I want more open space, and secondly I want my shelving pieces to be angled slightly downward toward the front pain of glass for better coral viewing.

Here is a pic from a fellow on RC here Im sure most of you are familiar with

DSC05450.jpg

I want to model my scape after something like this.

Questions,

Do I use my current live rock, or would it be simpler to buy new liverock and try from there

What tools do I use to shape my liverock?

If I use my current rock, do I need to completely dry it to make the cement and glue cure firmly and properly?

Where do I get acrylic rods here in town.

I plan on having all of my finished product aquascape pre-drilled for frags on acrylic rods. After watching a few vids of other guys who have done this, I see no other method as effective and efficient. Heres an expample from Youtube.

Update april 18 2012

Both the flame scallops are dead... they slowly withered away, I knew this would happen.

My cheato or macro algae in the sump doesnt seem to be growing very much. I had a 50/50 pc bulb on it, the macro grew coraline algae on it.

I switched out bulbs last week for a regular pc bulb, i think its only 2,700k though, so ill be upgrade to a 5,600 later today when i stop at homedepot. Anyone ever notice that the macro just survives, not thrives?
