Rio Pumps Get Them Out!!!!!

ive never had one burst into flames but i have had the stray current problem (pump was totally submerged) so i know they have watertight problems. i also know that they create a but load of heat in the water. thats why i stopped using them. tired of fighting the heat and getting shocked.

How old was this RIO? I will guess that it was bought used and/or you have had it for quite awhile? was it one with a grounded plug?

Mine was a brand new 3100 hundred that lasted all of 6 months and it had a ground plug. There were actual scorch marks on the impeller and in the impeller housing, it was completely submerged running my skimmer.

You guys have convinced me. I am done with rio's for sure. Not worth saving a couple of bucks in exchange for worrying about settin' the house on fire. Thanx for letting us know about this abfleck.

No problem!!

Without a grounded plug and it was less than a year old. Oh well! Glad no one got hurt

I removed the "grounding" probe on the plug of some of my pumps and lights. Am I in trouble here? I did this b/c I had to plug these items into timers and extension cords that wouldn't take a 3 prong plug.

Uh oh.... I have a RIO running my skimmer right now... Does anyone have a suggestion for a submersible skimmer that costs less than 200 that wont catch my house on fire...

Crosswire- As long as the impellers are similar and the flow rates are close, then you should be good to go (as long as the pump outlet fits into the skimmer inlet). What kind of skimmer is it?
