Ripped toadstool

I have no idea what got to my toadstool but overnight something seems to have taken a large chunk out of it. Below is a FTS taken on Tuesday evening and you can see it is just fine there. I fed my tank last night and everything looked fine. This morning when I looked over my tank before heading to work, I found a gaping hole in it (see picture below). None of my fish have ever nipped at it in the 6 months I have had it. The current inhabitants are: 1 each of clown, royal gramma and yellow watchman goby. Assorted CUC and a pistol shrimp.

Any thoughts on what might have caused this damage overnight? Water parameters are all spot on as of this past Saturday test.

I have no clue what caused it but you can take that piece off and attach it to a frag plug with a rubber band and it will grow another toadstool. Very strange it tearing like that.

You might have some sort of unwanted hitchhiker in your tank. My LFS had this happen to a bunch of his soft corals one time and then he found a dark & sinister looking crab lurking among the rocks. Problem solved.
Toadstools are known to drop pieces like that as a form of reproduction though, but the fact that this happened overnight sounds a little fishy to me. GL.

Thanks folks! The tank has been extremely stable for the past 6 months or so since the time I had a overheating issue due to house HVAC issues so I am at a loss for what might have happened. I might just have to bring out the flashlight and observe the tank after lights out to see if I can spot any villains roaming the tank. In the meantime, I guess I will have an extra toadstool after attaching it to a frag disc! Hopefully it will survive.

Don't forget you'll need a red lens so not to spook anything. Hope you find out what it is that did that. Just looks strange being such a big piece.

This is accurate. The part about them dropping pieces. There are about 5 dropped pieces, over time, that are now 5 big new stools in my tank. The main guy that sheds pieces is rather large. Check pics.

It almost looks like some type of tissue necrosis. Is this a yellow toadstool? I have received some yellows in the past that came in with brown patches on them. Over the next day or so, that brown patch turned into a hole or chunk missing from the tissue.

If you have Lugol's, try dipping it in a 5g bucket of sw with x2 drops of Lugol's
