Announced on their FB page today, and right here in Ruskin, FL. Congrats for a major milestone in our hobby!

Rising Tide Conservation is pleased to announce the first ever successful captive breeding of the Pacific Blue Tang (Paracanthurus hepatus). The advance was made possible by the efforts of a committed team of biologists including Eric Cassiano and Kevin Barden at the UF Tropical Aquaculture Laboratory in Ruskin, Florida. The laboratory is directed by Craig Watson; Dr. Matt DiMaggio oversees integration with Rising Tide Conservation. Rising Tide Conservation identified this species as one of conservation interest for aquaculture in 2010.
Pacific Blue Tang broodstock have been maintained at the lab for approximately 4 years. Recent changes in larval rearing based on the success of Yellow Tang at the Oceanic Institute of Hawaii Pacific University skyrocketed the the team to success.
The next step is to help commercial producers replicate UF's success, Craig Watson said. "œOur industry partners are ready to gear up."

WOOT! This is great news!!!!. These are some very beautiful species and very coveted. It is great news that we can now captive breed these and there is no need to take them from the wild.

Thank you for sharing.

Just waiting for these guys to start hitting the local market. Might take a little while but it's now going to happen!
