Roatan Diving

Hey all,

I just booked a trip to Roatan in June. I will be staying at Bannanarama Dive Resort.

I was just wondering who had experience diving here and what reefs would you recomend??

Thanks for the help!

I've done a lot of diving in Roatan. All of the sites are really good diving, every one of them is very unique. One I would recommend that most boats don't go to is a site called smith's bank. It is really cool. One of the only pristine reefs in the world. I can't remember if bananarama is on the water or not. Snorkeling is possible everywhere because the reefs are about 100 feet of the shore. Let me know if you have any questions, because I have spent a lot of time there, and I am actually thinking about moving there sometime in the next year.

Great! Thanks for the info, I will have to ask about that site. What part of the island is it off? How far out?

The resort is right on the beach at West Bay Beach.

I don't remember what part of the island smith's bank is on, but any dive shop should know what you are talking about. If the resort you are staying at is right on the beach then snorkeling is a good possiblity. I'm not as familiar with west bay as I am with sandy bay, but I'm sure it's all mostly the same. Also be sure to enjoy the night life in west end.

Roatan

Hi,

I just got back from my second trip to Honduras, Utila and Roatan.

My favorite dive spots in Roatan are:

Calvin's Crack
The wreck at the West End at about 110 ft.
Prince Albert

There are several other great ones. I would be glad to tell you more of them.

Bye

We went snorkelling at Tabyana Beach, and some other divers were a little further out in the same area. They said there's a nice wall just off of the beach and they had a great time....

I just got certification! WOOOHAAA!

Roatan is nice, assuming you don't want to get overtaken by schools of fish like you would in Cozumel. Where Roatan wins is diversity. It has the highest percentage of coral and fish speices in the Caribbean vs any other island. However, most the interesting stuff is very small and hard to locate, so diving with a DM that knows the reefs is imperative. Without a great DM it'll be just like any other destination in the Caribbean. Likewise, its not a bad idea to bring down a small hand held magnifying glass if you have trouble with vision. Seahorses, Pipefish, etc., all look better with magnification :)

Enjoy. Roatan is a fun island.
