ROCK Beauty Angel Are They Hard To Keep

I've never kept one, having been scared off by the stories of poor shipping followed by long term diet problems.

However, it looks like this month's TOTM might have one?

They are said to do very poorly. I have a juvenile I got a few months ago, it is doing great. I don't know if that will translate into adulthood, but it eats everything, including Ocean Nutrition angel formula with sponge. Sponges are supposed to be very important in the diet. I posted a while ago about them, and had a few people say they kept them long term. I would get a subadult, between 2 and 4 inches, and make sure you can see it eat and inspect for any problems. Make sure you have an established tank with plenty of live rock, hopefully with some sponges growing.

I have always heard how hard they are to keep, but if you find a subadult and raise it on sponge containing food and a varied diet of other nutritious stuff they should do allright. I was just at the Shedd Aquarium and in there large display tank in the center of the building they have a very very fat Rock Beauty that is probably around 8inches or so.

They have very different diet from other angels.

I never saw one that was kept alive in a home tank or public aquarium for more than a year.

Sponge, Sponge and more Sponge. Saw them while snorkeling in the bahamas and they were continously tearing at these stalk like sponges.

so you are saying that my juvenile, which is brightly colored, active and healthy will not make it? I have sponge in the tank (though not from Caribbean rock) and have not seen it pick at it much. the fish is certainly thriving and growing. I can get more sponge, and can get it growing on rock native to the Rock Beauty's habitat. I plan to put the fish in a 210. any input, ideas or suggestions from someone experienced with this fish?
