Rock height

How high should rocks be in the tank? I just got 75 pounds of marco rock (base rock) to go with my 50 lbs of LR when I transfer the tanks. Well, the 75 pounds is so much surface area it looks as if there could be 200 pounds right now in it without the LR yet, plus I took out 2 peices and it is still really high.

Doesnt matter. Whatever you like. I personally like having it built up really high for the look, just make sure that its secure. If you decide you dont like how much you have, you can always send some to me!! :)

It greatly depends on what look you want. Remember the base rock is dry, so the 75 lbs dry would probably be 125 lbs or so "wet". If you can get good flow without dead spots, then it's probably an acceptable amount. Since its dry base rock, you can put in say half and always add more later with concern of a cycle.

Good idea SaltyDr on maybe half here and half later. Well sir_dudeguy, one rock I took out was like 1.5' x 1' almost lol. There are 3 others big in there too that if I took those out it would be a lot smaller also.

Right now I put a filter that is suppose to go in the megaflow over flow in the water, moving rocks around and it looks like mud. I wanted to transfer tanks this weekend lol. On those filters, they are just foam filters, would you recommend not putting one in the megaflows for nitrate reasons? It does recommend on them to change them every month or so. They just came with the overflows.

dry rock wont cause a cycle.

If you put that foam filter thing over the overflow intake thing, just clean it like once a week.

sir_dudeguy, you said you liked the look of the high rock, and I think I do too especially when it's full with coral, but what about fish swimming room? I want 2 tangs. Just make enough caves in the big pile of rock and they won't care?

I used PVC pipes going up the back of my tank, with a sturdy base under the sand, and drilled holes in the rock, and slid the rocks over the pipes. My rock wall goes up the back of the tank, (with a little room to get behind it for some equipment) so I can go pretty high without fear of an avalanche, and it left a lot of swimming room up front. I have a tall tank and needed the live rock but wanted some room for sand up front and room for the fox-face rabbit to swim.

how big is this tank gonna be again? I think you said 75 but i dont see it now lol.

If it was 75, then i already would not put 2 tangs in it. I'd only put one tang (a yellow tang) in a 75. Just my opinion.
