Rock Lifts?

I've seen on another site where someone built a bunch of "rock lifts" and mounted them to the bottom of a tank to raise rock up above the top of the sand a bit. They are basically just acyrlic blocks with acrylic rods broken off at varying heights...the "broken" tip of the rod looks like it serves as a nice way to hold the rock.

Just wondering about some opinions on this...seemed sort of strange to me to see the rocks floating above the surface of the sand, but on the other hand I can see where it will keep any debris from collecting under the rocks.

There are a few technices like that. Some use PVC also. I dont like the rod idea as i think it puts too much stress on the glass, at the various points on th bottom. I have built a rack out of 1/2"c pvc(?) I was thinking of using, then, I was also thinking of just making a DIY rock rack. Whatever "I" do, I have to keep the feet small enough not to catch the eye of my sand digging goby.
