I'm getting ready to set up my 150 gal and have read about several ways to set up the rock. Should the rock go in first and then the sand? Should I put a layer of egg crate on the bottom first? How deep should the sand be? Thanks for any help.
Its all a matter of preference... But the rock shouldn't go directly on the glass... Most people set the rock on egg crate or PVC... But depth of your sand bed is purely up to you... I have mine a couple inches in one tank, and then about 3 or 4 in one of my others...
I would have about an inch of sand or 1/4" of crushed coral unless you are going for a live deep sand bed (I don't recommened it in the main tank) or want to keep a jawfish or some other burrowing critter. If that case, 4~6 inches of sand would be best (at least in one portion of the tank).
Of course, I say all this while staring at my little 24G cube that has nothing but LR rubble for a substrate.
