Rocks against the glass?

Sounds like a silly question but is it ok to stack a couple hundred pounds of rocks on the bare bottom glass? I plan to run a sandbed but for stability I was going to put the rock in first. The stand for the tank is a metal stand that supports the perimeter of the tank. The tank will sit on a piece of styrofoam and a piece of 3/4 inch plywood (the styro will be on top of the plywood and the tank on top of the styro). Tank dimensions are 60Lx24Wx30H.

Thanks for any help

Do a search on bare bottom tanks, reefers use cutting board material, I cant remember what the material is made of though. Makes for a natural look and is cheap. I would not advise that much rock against bare glass.

There are a lot of bare bottom tanks here, so I see no problem.

It shouldn't be a problem to stack the rocks on the glass bottom. Most tanks have tempered glass for the bottom panel. Nearly everone does it that way.

If you want to really be safe, you could lay down some eggcrate first for stability, add your rock and then finally your sand.

Use cutting board material across the bottom. Run a search on bare bottom tanks to see exactly what the material is made of. I would not recommend not using anything at all.

Lots of people put rocks on the bare glass, then cover it with sand. In fact, thats the preferred way to do it. I don't understand why you're recommending him putting starboard under it. The only reason people use starboard in BB tanks is to prevent a crack in case a rock falls from the top of the rock structure and makes contact with the bottom.

On a side note, if your tank is made of glass, there's no need to have any styrofoam underneath the tank. Thats solely for acrylic tanks.

i had a BB for a while and had a piece of vinyl that I bought from HomeDepot cut out that my rocks sat on. It was white so it helped reflect some light back onto the rocks and corals and that's always a good thing :D

I have had my 120 fowlr set up for awhile. I have about 130 lbs of rock stacked up on bareglass. I have had no problems here. The bottoms are usually tempered glass so it is quite strong.

well i have my rocks against the glass, but i regret it , because a lot of algae growns on the glass and i cant reach with my glass cleaner without moving the rock and disturbing everything in the tank!
