I can't understand what you are talking about but I can tell you that laying the resin sideways will not work well for long. The water will channel and not go through the resin, it will channel on the top.
 
The middle filter is supposed to be a GAC (granular activated carbon) shown in first photo, photo 2 shows a refillabe/reusable filter that you can buy.

Can I use this refillable one and just add carbon to it and would it act just the same as the brand new 1 use unit.

It should work but the effectiveness will depend on the type of carbon you use. Also when you first start it up you will get a lot of fines coming off the carbon going into the next chamber. probably would be a better idea to make it the last carbon so you can use the "EZ flush" to flush out the fines. Why don't you just use the proper carbon filter that is available from many places. It will be cheaper and maybe better.
