Royal Gramma Jaw Problem

Hello there, I have had my Royal Gramma for about 3 Years. He is huge. Just recently he has been hiding in between two rocks on the sand bottom. He has beautiful color and has a good appetite. He seems to open his mouth very wide, just like a Bass would, multiple times in a row. And when he does this you can see a destinctive white line on his lower jaw about 3/4" long. He has always been active and a fast mover. But now I hardly see him. Any ideas would be helpful. Also is it normal for a sailfin tang to hang out in hair algae. It seems like he just likes to sit in and around it. It seems to be his best friend. Please any suggestions. Thankyou

It sounds like the Gramma has some sort of wound on his jaw. Assuming he is still able to eat and the wound does not seem to be infected, I suggest no action. If you see deterioration of the flesh, you should move him to a treatment tank any try an antibiotic (Maracyn-Two or nitrofurazone are good choices).

As for the sailfin... sometimes there is no accounting for fish behavior. As long as he doesn't seem to be in distress I wouldn't worry about it.

Thanks stuart, I wish I could get a better look at him, but just like alot of women, he is shy and does not like to show his face.

Thanks , Denny
