Where do RPE's light to be mod flow, near the top with high light or low light.
I have 250W 20k bulbs.

Thanks Rob

They lighten up ( into orange PEs) in higher light. Keeping them in low light will keep the deep red color.

I personally don't, but find any site that claims to have the "true" orange PEs and that's them. It's simply a matter of light. I got 'em in red and turned 'em orange thinking they needed light under a 10K then moved them to a lower watt 15K bulb and they turned red again. Frankly the orange isn't that nice, it looks rather washed out to me personally.

Huh... My RPE's just get white speckles when under high light (as fo most peoples one time Protopaly's including PPE's). I've never heard the changing to orange theory. I wish it were true. I've been looking for Envy Orange for years:rolleyes:.

yes, herein lies the ultimate problem that is especially prolific in the zoanthid forums. When we name something, we are simply placing a name on a color, NOT a specific coral. It makes generalizations like I made rather useless unless you have the same version of RPE that I have. Yours is probably a different coral that LOOKS the same and we call them RPE assuming they're the same.
Of course, we also are not discussing absolutes- like water parameters and light spectrum, but just discussing relatives. What is "high light" for one is not for another.
These things make discussion of color maintenance and acquistition quite frustrating!
It is interesting to know yours act differently than mine, and all the info exchange is often usefull, but certainly difficult to draw much conclusion from!
Cheers!
Steve

I have seen about three different zoas that are called RPE's... Here are the ones I have.

By high light, I'm talking 250W DE 10K AB's and 320W of VHO. I haven't seen many bulbs as bright as the DE 10K AB's. They keep all of my sps in a small state of sun burn unlike any other bulbs I've seen. Thye make sps pop with color (actual color-not fluorescence), but nothing fluoresces under them, as they are closer to 8-9K's from most people's estimations (unlike the SE 10K AB's that are closer to 13K's). From Sanjay's info, this was one of the most par producing bulbs I could find in the 250 DE realm (with the 12K Helios being higher).

This is an excellent example-- my defination of "highlight" in my tank is under 10K SE 250W which have a PAR of 186 (AND I'm using a lumenarc reflector), whereas your bulb has a rating of 104, much less than mine, in fact closer to the 20K XM SE that I had them under previously when they were deep red.
It would appear as though our two versions react differently to different light.

However, if you want orange envy- you might try putting yours under a brighter light if you or a friend have one and see what happens!

Good grief. What kind of bulbs are you burning? I assume they are SE's on an HQI ballast? I can't go with anything brighter. These burn my sps and keep them burnt... I can't keep most LPS, because they get too much light (unless pushed in under a cave). I've been getting colors out of my sps that I've not seen in other people's tanks because they seem to be in a continual state of controlled bleaching (blue tip acros turn light blue entirely down the stalks instead of only at the tips, etc.).

pondfrog,

You've got me intrigued. I've never heard anyone say they turned RPE's into Envy Orange before. Everyone who mentions higher light ends up with the speckles (in RPE's and PPE's, primarily). Do you have any pics (before and after or just after)?

Unfortunately, I didn't take any photos of them when they were orange, but I just peeked at the orange envy on zoaid and they were similar to those 3 on their site. Like I said, I personally didn't care for the orange vs. the red color, so I dropped them back down in light strength and the "redded" up again! :)
