Rubble on sand

I'm starting to accumulate rubble on my sand from empty turbo shells (hermits kill them) and other stuff working itself to the surface. Is it okay just to remove this stuff as part of my monthly cleaning. Does anybody else run into this issue?

Also, my sand is a bit thin. How do I add new sand? Can I just put down a light layer during monthly cleanings and let it build up over several months.

Any thoughts welcome.

The "rubble" you're speaking of is not a problem of any kind...except an aesthetic one if you don't like the looks of it. So, you could take it all our if you want. It's interesting that while looking at the substrates available these days for a new FOWLR that I'm working on right now, I notices that they now sell sand with rubble included. Some people like that look and the rubble is useful to certain fish, like jawfish, for shoring up their retreats so they don't cave in. But, again, it's not a critical thing and you can keep the rubble in there or get rid of it at any time...it's really your call.

As for the sand, kurt, you can add some regularly right from the package. I did that when I converted from a crushed coral substrate to sand about a year ago with no problem at all.

I thought my sand sifters would like a little more room to do their thing. I'll start taking out a few items every month and see how it goes.

certain sand sifters will also build with the rubble.i have 2 two spot gobies that use the rubble for cave opening support.

My tiger goby also likes to arrange and rearrange his building materials. :)

If you have a refugium, you could add it there for a pod pile.
