Sad news to report for anyone who read my thread from earlier this week. My clownfish jumped out last night and I didn't know until it was too late. I used phosphate rx last week and after that my clown and carpet anemone didn't like it. The clown started acting weird and the anemone looked like it was slowing dying. I did a 40% water change and the anemone looks a lot better and thought the clown was getting there too. Sad to report that she jumped out twice last night and the second time she was out of water for over an hour. She was the first salt water fish I got when I switched from fresh water to salt. 3 1/2 years I had her. :(

That bites. Sorry to hear. Now I'm eyeing my open top tank and it is making me a bit nervous...

RIP clownfish... Sorry to hear :(

To respond to the others -- open top tanks always have the risk of fish jumping, but IME as long as fish are happy and healthy, most will not try to jump. As soon as something makes them unhappy/stressed, some species are more likely than others to go carpet surfing.

Sorry for your loss.

Screen top your tanks! BRS sells kits or DIY one from the big box hardware stores. Very cheap and they do work. I've made and used them over the years on previous tanks I've owned. Worth every penny. Just search "DIY screen top" in the DIY threads here on RC.

top of tank

top of tank

Although open top tanks are gorgeous I refused to do it as Fish Jump that's all there is to it...if not today...tomorrow... all of them!!!!!

I do not recommend glass top... you want evaporation so have a screen top is the way to go.... some people do eggcrate ...I find the screen slicker.

Cheers,

Sorry about the loss of that clownfish....never good to lose an animal.

Tim

+1 on the screen tops! I was hesitant to do it in a rimless tank but if you take your time it can look real sleek.
