Safeway clams ( live ) for nutreint export

I picked up 10 clams at safeway today for 10 bucks they are really cheap. I heard some where that they can be good for nutriend export in aquariums. And I have a LOT of nutrients so I figure I have nothing to loose. I wased the sells off so that hopefully anything bad would not get in my tank. They havnt opened up yet. Is my tank to warm for them? should I get rid of em?

you should have asked before you bought them:)

yes get ride of them. half may live for a little while, but then the other half will die.

if your water has that much nutrients then slow down on feeding or get a bigger skimmer.

I would suggest removing them while they are still visible. I tried this once. They lived for a few months, and then died. The fun part is digging the rotting carcass out of the sand it has burrowed in. Definitely not worth the risk.

theres a 5 pager around here on this topic somewhere
Oh, it's 7AM, I can search, here ya go.

IMO a skimmer is a better investment...you put the clams in for export, yet more than likely you'll have to dose your tank to keep them alive..kinda counterproductive eh?

Anyway, feel free to resurrect that other thread, it's about time for some updates, from rereading it, it does sound like most of them will die sooner instead of later.

Cheers,
