salt group buy

Shai Dorsai!
I need some salt. I have no particular brand loyalty. Any one interested in a salt group buy? Any one have a favorite source?

Name, location, brand, and how much (assume units of measurement is buckets of salt).

I'll let this run for a couple of days to get an idea of the interest while I scout around for the best prices. I'll do a separate thread then with the price per unit.

just thinking, would we be better arranging something like
salt with a driveable store (PA, IA, etc?) and having someone
pick it up?

didn't we try something like this a while back? seems like
someone contacted PA, but thier markup was already too
low to do anything. (nothing against PA, I may be making
all of this up)

I remember Rick talking about getting IO by the pallet. I think that he said that a pallet made up around 4000 gallons.

We could pick up the salt at a meeting at his greenhouse (hint hint)

legoz placed an order online for sand and salt. the shipping was a flat rate of like $13, reglardless of weight. he ordered 200+ lbs of sand and two buckets of salt, all for $13 shipping. we may want his input on where he ordered from, as $13 for shipping for a buttload of salt buckets seems like a great deal.

I don't know about the calcium, last time I did a water change of 15g with IO my calcium went from 375 to 450

Not sure if they still run this special. But Petsmart online used to run free shipping on $50 or more. And this included salt. I paid $35 per 200 gallon bucket shipped. Now I'm sitting on about 150lbs of IO.

I have been suucessful in obtaining my salt at petsmart in champaign, they honor the online price which is currently 31.99 for IO salt where it typ[ically lists for 45.00 in the store. All you have to do is print the online price from there website bring in the copy and they have always honored the price. They also carry Oceanic and coralife salts.

seriously? is it an in-stock item or do they need to special order it for you?

They always have at least two 5 gal buckets in stock except when I got there before you then there is none :)

OK, was at my local Petsmart today, and as John says, they will price match their online price. $31.99 for a 150g bucket of IO is rather cheap I believe. Can anyone do better than this? If not, we can pool our money together and ask the Champaign Petsmart to order in a pallet for us (or howeve rmany we need) and then distribute it out from there. I live leterally 5 blocks from Petsmart, so storage at my place for pick-up would not be a problem. I will also volunteer Steve Walker brand new silverado to haul it :)

So I guess that is the number to beat... $31.99 delivered to us.

did you ask petsmart if they would order a pallet? I would think that we may have to use their system against them, I think if we wanted to order a pallet they would then charge us the shipping, where if they are just restocking their store it is built into all the items in the store and then shipping isn't focused on a special order. But I am guessing on this. Plus I dont want PS to realize that the online price doesn't include shipping and want them to continue to honor the online price w/o the shipping. because if you order from PS on line that same bucket of salt for 31.99 shipping is another 22 bucks, and that price rises with every bucket of salt.

Not to be anal but they are 160 gal buckets also. Its not a big deal for you, me and david but for blooper and other nanos out there, that 10 gals is a whole water change. ;)

We have an asset within CIMA to get this, we need/should ask him.

I was confused a bit about if they will sell at $32, why would
we "need" to buy a pallet?

I think what Henry was suggesting was we determine how
many we want to get and have them order them in.

However, if there's not a price advantage, and no vendor-support
benefit, is there any advantage to adding another distribution
layer (us) over just buying individually as needed? (Except for
you industrial users, David) :)
