Okay so maybe this sounds like a dumb question, but if I were to set up a trash can for my water changes, and I am only using 1/2 the volume every 2 weeks or so, is there a problem with the water just sitting around that long? I can't imagine that the nutrients are going anywhere?

The easy response is no you wont have any problems as long as the container is covered to prevent evaporation (rising salinity). The more indepth response is make sure its a food safe container to prevent phosphates & other bad stuff from leeching into your water.

Ensure the water remains in motion. If it sits still for to long the calcium will precipitate out of the water and onto the sides of your plastic container.
