Same ol' noob question. Is my clam gaping?

I just got my first clam last week. Since then my tank started leaking and I had to get a entire new one.
He is fully open and responds to shadows very quickly and quickly reopens when there are no shadows.
However there is the intake that is about 3/8 inch seperated and about a inch long. Is this gaping?
Thanks for your time.

if the clams mantle is out then its not true gaping. people do use the term "gaping" for when a clams incurrent syphon is open wide but its just a sign of some form of mild stress.

can you post a pic?

Guys i found out why my clam was gaping.
Apparently he had attached himself to a fragile tonga rock and the piece of rock broke off and he was basicaly "swalloing the rock" when he opened up. This would force his insides to be pushed outward and therefore he gaped.
Reattached him to a solid fiji rock and gape is gone and he is doing well. I hope this helps someone out there with a similar problem.
