I was wondering, i scuba dive and was wondering if i could get a piece of rock when i was diving and put it into my tank to use as live rock. I live in Florida and dive off the east coast or down in the keys. Also could i dig up some sand and put it in my tank? thanks!

Its illegal to collect any live rock from government waters, sadly. Its probably a good thing though cause alot of it would be gone if that ban wasnt there. you can decide for yourself just dont get caught, penalties can be steep for that.

You can put it in your tank just beware of hitchikers that will not be good for a reef tank. Also it is illegal and i dont know how tough it is enforced or potential fines.

I agree with reefWW96. It is illegal to remove rock/sand/critters from the ocean in Florida unless you have a special permit. Plus, it is bad for the environment. When I lived in florida I picked up some pourous limestone from inland. Soaked it for several days in a bucket of fresh water and placed it in my tank. Now it is covered with all kinds of crystaline, feather dusters etc. Aquaculture is the way to go my friend.

Florida Fish and Game does not play around. They spend a lot of time patrolling for illegal collecting. Plus, no reputable dive charter would let you within 100 feet of their boat with it. They risk loosing their boat.

Beyond being illegal and immoral, there is a reason that most phosphate is mined in Florida. The natural limestone and thus the liverock in florida has a high phosphate content. Is you want to grow a bunch of algae it would be good. But definently not in my tank nor would I advise anyone to do that.
