sand disappearing?

This might sound like a strange question, but does the sand dissolve some over time? It seems my sand level is lower. I have a watchman who constantly sifts the sand & moves it around, but overall there seems to be less. Also how do I add sand? Carolyn

The sand will disolve in time. If you are talking about the tank in your sig line I would add a couple of cups full a week of well rinsed sand over the top of your existing bed by sprinkling it all over. Since your bed is shallow you could proabably also get a way with scootching it out of a spot and filling the hole, but I don't like stirring things up that much!

Sand particles tend to collect on rocks, picked up by the skimmer, or dissolve over time. Gradually add the new sand into the tank over the course of a few weeks. I don't like stirring up the sand bed either, in case of harmful gas buildup and excessive detritus.

I understand about not stirring up sand, but my watchman will dig all the way to the bottom, and keeps sand stirred up all the time. He digs out sand from under rocks - I'm always afraid he's going to get crushed, but so far so good. I have sugar-size sand anyway - very fine.

Muttley - re: RDSB - what does "R" stand for?

R = remote

Having a DSB underneath the tank in a refuge would be considered a remote deep sand bed. :)
