hahaha so am I ... everyone in reefing sits on RC when @ work
Do you have a sand dollar? They usually bury themselves in the substrate and eat particles floating around in the water ... they are in the urchin family. That's all I know, but I think you have to find some sort of filter feeding food for it. Look at the company that makes Phytofeast Live!
I have never seen a living sand dollar at an LFS ... and have never seen a thread on it in the nano section .... might wanna try the other invertebrates section of RC ...
I volunteer at a public aquarium, and we have sand dollars. But they are all cold water, I don't know if they're are different species of sand dollars, but the purple ones we have are definitely in like 55 degree water. They are filter feeders, in the wild they feed in groups, they stand themselves up in the sand and postition themselves to be streamline with the current, so they can catch whatever the current brings them to eat. I have no idea about keeping them in a reef tank though, I do not think they would be found in reefs in the wild...At my aquarium though, we have them in their own tank, that's all I really know.
I've read they're only for "advanced" reefers, which probably explains why you don't see them for sale much. They probably don't do well in shipping and are probably very difficult to breed as well. Those are just speculations though.
I'm sitting here at work pretending to work while playing on here as well
sand dollars aren't worth any maintanance IMO ... they don't look that cool and don't do anything at all ... if it's a matter of maintanance and keeping one I would have told you it's not worth it already
If you can gather them live (i used to live in sarasota where TONS of them breed) and figure out what they like (DSB, algae, detrius) they would prob be ok if you have a big enough DSB to support em. I never tried although i'd like to...
