Sand Sifting Crabs... Anyone heard of/seen/have any of these????

I've seen and caught them at the jersey shore. They seem to be very delicate creatures.

I would also put them in the same category as sand sifting starfish....

Ie. kiss your sand-bed fauna goodbye.

Jersey shore?? so I take it they are not tropical, and would likely perrish shortly in a reef tank.

Well, I used to dig those up all the time at OC maryland when I was a kid. We have cold to hot arse weather here. The seller on ebay is selling them from florida??? so, seems like all they would need is to be aclimated and they should do okay, but, like mentioned, I would think they would destroy the sand bed as I have had to dig down a good 4" to get them. From that depth in your tank, you would more than likely be stirring up the layer thats supposed to be left alone.

Those are mole crabs, and people pay a lot for them at bait shops. I used to dig them up all the time in Florida, and I thought about using them as sand stirrers at one point. I'm just afraid that I'll introduce some type of pathogen to my reef, so I steer clear.

I used to just dig them up and them toss them in the air and let the seagulls catch them in midair.

Yeah they love to dig down deep and hangout in total darkness.

I am not sure if they are glass safe or not.

If I had them or any kind of crustacean I would make sure to get double thick glass.

i've caught them at myrtle beach in SC before. i wouldn't put them in your tank as others have said, but you never know. i would consider them sand "sifters" pers, more of a nuisance
(sp?) hole diggers.
