sand sifting shrimp

I need help, I purchased 2 shrimp aprx. 5-6" long, light brown in color. They told me they were sand sifting shrimp and reef safe. Does anyone know their technical name and or anything about them, should I be concerned, what can they cohabitat with.? Help Please.

Got a picture? I've never heard of sand sifting shrimp, but that doesn't mean there isn't any.

7 minutes between first and second posts....you are VERY impatient. sometimes one must wait longer than 7 minutes to get an answer, most people do have a life during the day my friend

The only sand sifting shrimp I'm aware of are Pistol shrimp, not familiar enough with them though to know if any might get that large. I'm sure you've heard this before, but you should always research purchases first. Build your tank around a stocking list of compatable species and habitat.

I have salt water grass shrimp that sift the sand in my reef tank. They stay buried most of the day and sift at night. Does your guy look any thing like this?

Yes, they do look like your grass shrimp, I will try to post my pic tonight and hopefully you can check back later. How big is yours.

mine are between 2 and 5 inches long, I have 4 large ones in my display and 2 smaller ones in my fuge. None of them have bothered any of my corals (sps, lps, zoas, shrooms, leathers) or my clams and the fish basically ignore them. Mine are breeding in my tank and I have several hundred babies growing in the sump. I think these critters are fascinating. Good luck with your guys!

Fishyvet, does your tank have a skimmer? Have the shrimp in your sump grown to resemble the adults, or are they still small?

I do keep a skimmer running in the sump but the young shrimplets stay behind the sponge divider and eat the detrius that collects in there. They do grow into minature adults (so they are not mysid ) I just need to figure an easy way to collect the little guys now.
