I have heard a bunch of mixed opinions regarding sand sifting stars and need some advice. I have a 65 gal with a 4" sand bed. Many people recommend putting a sifter star in to help move around the bed. I am also hearing from people that the star will completely deplete my sand bed of lifeforms rendering the bed useless as a filtration source and eventually starve.
My questions are as follows:
Is this star a bad idea? I also have around 15 Nassarius snails that burrow around constantly and do a decent job of stirring up the bed.
Will the benefit of the star's sifting abilities outweigh the organism depletion?
Will the sand bed be rendered useless in time or will there still be some filtration benefits?
Any feedback or suggestions would be appreciated.
