Stacker is organizing a sand trade for anyone interested
What is the Stacker Sand Trade about?
It started as an idea several years ago that stemmed from a local club meeting and it was taken to the next level by a fellow reef fanatic. I’m helping out by carrying out a sand trade myself as a test. I’d like to limit this trade to a volume of sand I can maintain in a Rubbermaid Agricultural Stock Tub. My concern is that I have a space limitation and plan to kick this thing off as a personal test and benefit to a number of folks. It’s not intended to be exclusive yet I may have to limit it if the response is too great.
Approximately 50 people sent sand for the first hosted trade and they received a return package about a month later. The response from the traders was unanimous - this was a good idea, and unlike most things in the hobby, it was cheap and positive. I can handle 50 easily and probably up to 100 packages.
For the cost of shipping and handling and a small donation to cover my out-of-pocket costs you too can participate. All it takes is 2 of cups of sand from your tank (no more, keep in mind I’m dealing with limited space). Your shipment to me should be deposited in a wide mouth plastic soda or water bottle with the lit properly sealed and atleast double zip-bagged to ensure it’s safe and dry delivery. This can be boxed or stuffed into a large bubble pack envelope available from your post office, Kinko’s, or UPS store blah blah. Send the sand to me via standard USPS priority shipping service and I will return in kind when the sand orgy has completed. Don’t ask me to send it special, express or overnight unless you plan to pay me for my troubles and the extra shipping cost.

Unlike other sand trades I want to keep the sand in my closed system for the winter rather than a single month. This is mainly do to the fast approaching winter weather we have here in Ohio. I’d like to have all participants sand in ASAP to avoid freezing during shipment and I will return the sand on a scheduled and posted date in late March or early April (weather permitting). As usual I will post info. feedback and pictures often enough to annoy any boneheads who didn’t participate of get off their duffs soon enough.
Cost:
Setup and maint. will cost me RO/DI (mine so it’s very cheap) Salt Mix, testing supplies, lights, heater, pumps, plumbing, sump, skimmer, blah blah (I do have all of this equipment (some donated, thanks) but will have to buy salt mix for 200 gal. top keep up with water changes). Add to that my time, and energy. The Electric to run this will cost a few bucks/mo. All I ask is that you respect my effort and include a few dollars above and beyond shipping to help out. After I do this once I can get a better feel for the actual cost. Honestly, I will not make a penny on your donations. Any income not spent directly for this trade will be spent on equipment to make the next one bigger and better. If someone wants to take it over I’ll happily send them everything the group paid for.
A ballpark cost to ship 3 lb. via USPS Priority mail is $10.00. I calculated it from my zip of 44483 to California’s 90210 so the cost should not exceed that price for anyone in the lower 48. I ask for a $2 min. donation per submission so the total cost to you is $12.00 Larger donations are appreciated and happily accepted but not necessary. Just helping out a bit lightens my load.
I would appreciate everyone including a money order, cashiers check, cash or paypal (paypal charges us to use it so I’ll have to ask anyone Paypal’ing to add $1 for the transfer charges or it will actually be costing me to do this. I’m a nice guy but can’t afford cash charity) with in the sand shipment. Please seal the money in a separate zip bag just in-case there is a leaker.
Limitations:
No Crushed coral, I want sands only but the type/color is not restricted.
Don’t send me more than 2 cups I have no idea how many will join and how soon I’ll be in a panic for space.
Don’t ask for more than 2 cups in return, it just won’t happen at this point in time.
Do your best to screen your sand for nasty critters. I don’t want to deal with bad snails, bad worms, flatties, redbugs, or the like if it can be avoided. I will however do a screen myself just cuz.
Please do not send sand from a tank experiencing a cyano outbreak or loaded with hair algae. I’d rather you sit this one out then load my system with troubles. Your return sand will be bug and algae free.
Do not under any circumstances send me sand from a tank that has been treated with antibiotics or copper remedy’s remedy’s of any kind.
Please use good judgment because your sand will become “our†sand. I will take every precaution and scrutinize each lot as well as the bulk show to ensure all goes well.
Thanks

Feel free to respond here, e-mail or PM me with and questions of comments.
Pass the word to firends who may not see this on the web as the more diverse sand we get in one batch the better mix we'll have later.
