Sand...yes or no for substrate?

I posted this in another forum but may be better suited here...

I know this subject is well versed as well as many are one way or the other. I have been in the hobby many years and have always had Sand substrates in all my tanks. I like the look but have always wondered what or rather how my system would do without sand. Problem is that I stick my tanks heavy with coral and in time the sand is impossible to syphon due to corals growing in much of the open space which is good but bad to access much of the sand. I would love to get feedback from those who have run both bare bottom tanks and substrate bottoms and which have fared better in the long run? I don't mind the look of corals eventually covering the bottom of the display but only if it benefits the long term health of the system.
