i am starting a 120g tank which will have a sump, protein skimmer . i am going to keep fish and live rock no corals. i wanted to get a clown trigger and other aggressive fish. i was wondering if i can put live sand down with critteres to stir it without them all being ate by my fish? Or should i put a undergravel filter with crushed coral . i could sure use some help in trying to figure this out thank you

IMO you should avoid undergravel filters and crushed coral. They're a recipe for disaster - build-up of trapped debris/detritus resulting in poor water quality.

If you plan on setting up a FOWLR there's no reason not have a shallow sand-bed, say an inch to 1.5 inches. If the snails get eaten just buy more. There are some fish that might do the trick too - stir up the sand-bed.
